Lenovo Phab Series has No Scheduled OTA Updates

Most Android enthusiasts love a good OTA update with even the monthly security patches being a high priority for them. So big version updates of Android are even more important and a lot expect an expensive, high-end device to receive at least 2 of these bigger updates. Sadly, Lenovo doesn’t have a very good reputation when it comes to software updates and it looks like they do not have any plans to update anymore of their current Lenovo Phab series either.

Granted, it’s not like any of these devices were high-end products but some of them are definitely up there at the lower side of flagship pricing. This is especially true with the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro, which was the first smartphone with Google’s Tango technology. This is a device that was advertised by both Lenovo and Google so it’s likely that a lot of people assumed it would be supported for at least a year’s worth of updates. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

So Lenovo has a number of devices in the Phab series including the original Lenovo Phab from 2015, the Phab Plus, Phab 2, Phab 2 Pro, Phab 2 Plus. The original Phab and the Phab Plus shipped with Android 5.0 Lollipop and that’s as far as they got in terms of big software updates. The other three in this list were all shipped with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and again, this is as far as they will go as Lenovo doesn’t have any plans for future software updates.

There are a couple of Lenovo’s tablets that seem to have been included in this batch as well. The company’s Android upgrade timeline shows that the Tab 3 7 Essential and the Tab 3 10 Business are both at the end of their life cycle. These shipped with Android 5.0 and 6.0 respectively and the company says they will not receive any updates in the future either. So if software updates from the OEM are important to you, then you may want to keep this information in mind.
