YotaPhone 3 Launches with a 5.2″ E-Ink Display on the Back

We used to see a lot of innovation and experimentation in the smartphone industry. Then it became harder to compete and taking risks like this could result in a company losing millions of dollars. Yota is a company who took a risk and felt that smartphones could benefit from an e-ink display. We reviewed the first YotaPhone back in 2014 and its successor was made available for pre-order one year later. After taking two years off to reorganize, the company is back with the newly unveiled YotaPhone 3.

The company producing the YotaPhone originated in Russia but during this time off they decided to change things up. They moved their assets from Moscow and Finland to Shenzhen in China and then proceed to change the name of the company to Baoli Yota. They had originally announced the YotaPhone 3 a couple of months ago, but had yet to reveal what the device would look like. Now that the device has been launched, we can see what we’re getting for our money.

The YotaPhone 3 has a 5.5″ 1080p AMOLED panel on the front paired with a 5.2″ 720p e-ink display on the back. The e-ink display even comes with 3 capacitive buttons to help navigate the software without needing to use the main AMOLED panel. It has the Snapdragon 625 SoC inside and will come in two different versions. The 4GB of RAM variant will have 64GB of internal storage and there will be another with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

The back of the device houses a 13MP camera with a dual-tone flash and it will be paired with a 12MP sensor on the front. The YotaPhone 3 will ship with Android 7.1.1 Nougat with the company’s YotaOS 3.0 OEM ROM on top of it. Inside it has a 3,300mAh capacity battery that can be charged with a USB Type-C cable. Pre-orders begin on September 5th for ~$360 and ~$465 depending on the storage option you pick, with actual sales starting on September 18th.
